Oakland, Alameda County
Lake Merritt is a tidal lagoon in the middle of Oakland, ringed by parks and a walking path of a little over three miles. In 1870 the state made it a wildlife refuge, the first in the United States, and it became a National Historic Landmark in 1963. Migrating birds still winter on its waters.
